Drawing My 1st Pictures and Stories Step by Step is the 1st book in Drawing a Story! Series. It contains 42 target items across six categories, including animals (i.e., non-human animals), vehicles, household items, outdoor items, people (i.e., human animals), and emotions. These items are relatively common in young children's daily life.
Structure & Planning 📝 📝 📝
Teaching is systematically planned in three stages in this book: (1) Skill Acquisition, (2) Generalization, and (3) Creation.
In Stage 1, following a step-by-step model, children will first learn how to draw each item within a category. The focus is basic drawing skills.
In Stage 2, at the end of each category, children will be asked to draw the learned items without models following Old MacDonald's stories. The focus is skill generalization. Children will also learn how to put simple drawings into meaningful stories in this stage.
In Stage 3, children will explore using simple drawings to express ideas and create their own unique stories following a simple story structure at the end of the book!
The author has uniquely applied behaviour science to young children's drawing instruction. Behavioral technologies or procedures such as modelling and recombinative generalization (see Chan et al., 2022; Langton et al., 2020, for more) are used throughout the teaching and probing process.
